Homeschooling with Five in a Row-- Here is our week in review with the book, Duchess Bakes a Cake from Volume 3!  We had a lot of fun with this one!

For our last row of Big Brother's 5K year, we had plenty of Medieval Fun with the storybook, The Duchess Bakes a Cake!

This actually took place back in May (good grief!  I am finally sharing it in AUGUST!) and I am just now getting around to sharing it with you!

We've since been busy playing outside and diving into our Summer Schooling plans.  And this just may be the last row that we will do for a while.  I don't want to say ever again because I've said it before, and it just didn't last!

I do have something else in mind for Big Brother's 1st Grade Year and after three years of rowing (2 that I have blogged about), I am ready for something different.  I do plan on reading some FIAR titles this summer, so maybe I will pull out the manuals for an activity or two... We shall see!!

Anyways, this was such a fun read... a bit on the longer side, so T began to get a little antsy during the week, but I thought the rhyming scheme and storyline was just delightful.  I paid full price for this baby on Amazon, and I am glad to have it on my shelves!  As you can see in the first picture I am sharing with you... we had a ton of great go-alongs, too!!

The Duchess Bakes a Cake

The Duchess Bakes a Cake took place during the Middle Ages, but didn't give an exact location.  We have talked about many European countries this year, so I introduced one that we had not read about yet... Ireland.

T chose to use paint to make our flag and add it to our Trip Around the World Garland.

For Social Studies, we also talked about Actions/ Consequences.

For Language Arts, we played Rhyming Dominoes!  We have never played dominoes before, but he did a great job!  All of the words were  cvc or cvcc words, so it was great reading reinforcement, too.

And we talked about Alliteration.

We had fun coming up with different sentences and such.  Over lunch one day, we each took turns adding a word to a sentence-- with the focus on keeping the same beginning sound.

T filled in a worksheet from Education. com and busted out laughing while I read it back to him.  It was pretty silly!

We read several books about Knights and castles.  We used some printables from Homeschool Share and after coloring and labeling, I had Big Brother write three things he learned.

For math, we talked about the number 13.  Big Brother used this cute cake printable and manipulated the candles to show ways we can make 13.

For Art, I drew several basic stick figures from the book and him had to try and match the stick figure to the pictures.

For some more Medieval Art, we built a clothespin catapult.  And flung marshmallows to noodles!

Meet Sir T!
We used cardboard for his sword and shield and covered his sword with aluminum foil.

For his helmet, we taped a piece of poster board in a circle, cut out a square for his eyes and covered with aluminum foil.

Later that night, he fought against Sir Daddy and won!!

Last, but not least,
To celebrate his last row and in honor of this book, my son invented his own cake!!  Well, we kinda vaguely followed a recipe but he choose the ingredients and topping-- chocolate cake with chocolate chips and melted marshmallows on top!

Thanks for reading along!
